Take me to Wonderland

Charlotte Free on the cover of Wonderland magazine Fall Winter 2011. The styling for this looks so lush! Can't wait to see the rest of the spread.

Cry baby

I love (no pun intended) this cover for the upcoming issue 6 of LOVE magazine, styled by (of course) Katie Grand and photographed by Mert & Marcus.
I generally have mixed feelings towards the content of LOVE, but the covers alway catch my attention. This one in particular is appealing to my love of dark imagery and vivid blue. Keeping my eyes peeled for more images...

Monki Business

I signed up to the monki mailing list ageeees ago, honestly I'd pretty much forgotten about it!

However lo and behold, this week my first free issue of Monki magazine arrived! I was intrigued about the magazine after I discovered a lot of the same people work on it as material girl magazine, one of my long time, must buy magazines (and also where my blog got its name!). Safe to say I wasn't disappointed, the type (geek moment), layouts (further geek moment), shoots and general positive vibe of the magazine is really cool.

I'm pretty sure you can't get hold of any of the Monki merch in the UK/USA, but that's not to say you can't ge a little eye candy as compensation...

Lula Issue 10

I just picked up the latest issue of Lula. Can you believe it's the tenth issue..?! It doesn't seem so many, and yet I only have four issues. There's a sad space next to them longing to be filled with back issues (okay, I lie, my shelf is straining under the pressure of magazines, but I would gladly trade a lifetime of mundane publications for dreamy older issues....)

Lula # 10 features covers themed by Strawberry Shortcake characters. I would have expected myself to go for the Chanel Iman cover, but I was drawn to the 'Blueberry muffin' cover featuring Addison Gill instead. You can view all the other covers within whichever you pick, along with an interview with strawberry shortcake's original creator.

My favourite spread (of which there are MANY....did there used to be so many?!), is definately 'Why don't they let us fall in love?' shot with Ali Michael by Catherine Servel. Catherine also shot the last cover with Karen Elson. I hadn't realised how many of my favourite shoots she had shot until I began doing some serious internet investigation as a result of trying to find images from the actual shoot (below).
Oddly, the spread looked suspiciously similar to the advert for Orla Kiely which is at the back of the magazine. I know it was the same beauty/photog/stylist/model team, but for a second I thought I had turned to an image from the spread! Both are amazingly shot, just very similar.

What did you think of issue 10?

Volt Magazine Issue 07

Last week I was emailed some exclusive sneak previews on the new issue of Volt magazine. Volt is quite an unusual magazine. For starters, it's twice the size of your average Vogue or Elle, and neatly enough comes without being bound so you're free to remove the pages and blue tack them to your walls without unsightly staple rips or accidentally ripping the page in two (we've all been there...).
Not that you'd need much more encouragement to do this of course. The imagery is always lush, be it a giant dripping chanel lipstick, Daisy Lowe peering from under her fringe in intense close-up or a model with hair teased so high is resembles a storm cloud.

So what do the two covers (i.e. Gemma Slack plus Mark Fast) equal? Knowing Volt, it could be anything...

The full issue will be released March 2010.

Lula Magazine club at R D Franks

I've only just gotten around to posting this despite it happening last week, but I attended a 'Lula magazine club' evening at R D Franks, an amazing magazine shop in London.
Apparantly they have held the magazine club before for other magazines like ACNE paper, but I was personally tempted by a leaflet in store promising Lula and cake. Mmm.

I wasn't sure what to expect. I turned up by myself (due to my friends being unable to make it at the last minute) and there was a few other girls and the odd guy hanging around. There were also cute fair banners up everywhere. At this point I still wasn't exactly sure what the 'magazine club' entailed, but more people were arriving by the minute, so I browsed the magazines (though really, I didn't need much excuse!). I saw chairs being arranged in a big circle, and not being a massive fan of public speaking I almost scarpered there and then, imagining being interrogated/ asked the killer question 'so let's go around the circle and tell us a little about yourself..?'

NO.

Anyway the woman in charge seemed really nice so I decided to stick around to see what was going on. She also had a really cute luella top on (!).
We were all asked to sit and half of me was still wondering if it had been a good idea. But once we all started talking I actually started having loads of fun.
Because my Uni is small, it was really interesting to hear what some people outside my usual network had to say. As Lula is my favourite magazine I mostly sat back and listened to what everyone had to say as I already have a pretty set opinion on the magazine (a.k.a l♥ve!).

We talked about everything from how the magazine is laid out and its aesthetics to the controversial leaving of Becky Smith (founder and former creative director of Lula) to start Twin magazine. Scandelous!

Then of course the cake came out and the rest was history!

I apologise for my shoddy documenting, I didn't want to seem like I was stalking any of the people by taking too many pictures! I was also next to a book case and the group was actually a lot bigger than it looks!

You've got issues

I just got around to watching the infamous 'September Issue'. And I also needed an excuse to post this photo. Anna's face says it all. Alexa's face just says 'AWKWARDDDDD'.

Apart from now being an utter Grace Coddington convert (the woman is AMAZING), I was surprised at the creativity of her vision, particularly her attitude towards the images in Vogue. She seems to have such a forward thinking mindset, which honestly I do not acossiate with Vogue US very often.
This was clear in the Steven Meisel photoshoot that she fights for throughout the film, 'Paris, Je T'aime' by Steven Meisel.

A dreamy cast of models (Coco Rocha, Guinevere Van Seenus, Caroline Trentini, Sasha Pivovarova, Gemma Ward, and Agyness Deyn) and similarly etheral photographs. Yeah, I'm in love ♥. They shouldn't have cut the photographs out, they should have cut Sienna out and devoted the whole magazine to this shoot! Especially the first group photo on chez lounges which was cut, but was amazing. Anyone know where I can find it?

p.s. I kind of loved how Coco Rocha kept appearing everywhere. My favourite moment was when she popped out from behind a board when Jean Paul Gaultier shouted 'Cocoooooo'.
